Zwan's Story

    La rumeur est partie le 18-19 octobre 2001 du journal californien Bakersfield, et plus particulièrement de Chris Page : "Oh, le paradoxe du reporter : Deux membres d'un groupe majeur de rock alternatif, maintenant séparé (nous parlons de concerts dans des stades, de millions de disques vendus et d'egos de rock star par-dessus le marché), dont le leader, ont formé un groupe secret appelé Zwan. Le groupe devrait faire une performance à Bakersfield au Jerry's Pizza le 17 novembre. Les tickets sont à vendre dès lundi au Wavelengths SBI et au World Records. Le problème, c'est que je ne peux pas vous donner le nom du groupe original ou les noms des membres du groupe. Si je laisse cette info s'échapper, le concert ne va pas se tenir. Le groupe veut se faire discret pour ce nouveau projet, c'est pourquoi Nate Berg, l'instigateur du concert chez Jerry, a dû signer un contrat en promettant de ne pas faire connaître le show au public en utilisant les noms de l'autre groupe ou des membres. Si ceux-ci apparaissent avant, le groupe ne va pas se montrer. (Aussi près que je puisse aller, je pense, serait de vous dire que le prénom du chanteur rime avec Willy, et qu'il ressemble à Oncle Fester.) Le truc à faire : Vous pouvez appeler les magasins où les tickets sont vendus et ils pourront vous renseigner." Infos trouvées sur le site de fans de Zwan.
    Le groupe s'est présenté sur quelques scènes de Californie du Sud, le 16 novembre à Pomona, le 18 à Santa Ana, le 20 à San Diego et le 21 à Los Angeles. Le site officiel du groupe a ensuite annoncé les concerts du 13 décembre à The Intersection des Grand Rapids (Michigan) avec Sleeping At Last en première partie, et du 14 décembre à l'Emerson Theatre d'Indianapolis (Indiana)...
    En avril, le groupe est rejoint par la très belle (voir photos) bassiste Paz Lenchantin, du groupe A Perfect Circle, pour des concerts avec 3 guitares, à Columbia, St Louis et Chicago.
    Le 18 mai 2002, Jamboree 2002 à Tinley Park, Illinois, avec onze chansons, dont une participation de Marianne Faithful, sur "The First Time". Jouées "Lyric", "Cast A Stone", "The World Goes Round", "For Your Love", "Endless Summer", "Settle Down", "The First Time (avec Marianne Faithful)", "Jesus, I", "God's Gonna Set This World on Fire", "Glorious", "A New Poetry".
    Le 9 septembre 2002, Matt Sweeney, Billy Corgan et David Pajo se retrouvent sur scène à Chicago ; après Matt Weber, Nora O'Connor et Sonia Dada, Matt Sweeney a joué une chanson de Roky Erickson, puis "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" de Jimmie Dale Gilmore avec David Pajo au piano ; puis Conrad Keely, à nouveau David Pajo seul au piano, Burning Brides, Paz Lenchantin et Chris Holmes ; enfin Corgan seul pour finir le show, avec deux chansons, dont "une chanson spéciale, car c'est la 500ème chanson triste que j'ai écrite" (Chicago SunTimes).
    Fin septembre 2002, on apprend par Blender magazine que le groupe a fini d'enregistrer son premier album et qu'il recherche un label, information relayée le 8 octobre par Corgan qui annonce sur le Message Board du site de Zwan que l'album devrait sortir à la fin de l'année.

Biographies
    Retrouvez les biographies de Billy Corgan et de Jimmy Chamberlin dans la rubrique Histoire..
    Matt Sweeney : était le leader de Skunk, un groupe de punk-rock de New Jersey, dont Last American Virgin (Twin Tone, 1989) et Laid (Twin Tone, 1991) n'ont pas révolutionné le genre, mais l'ont rendu certainement moins antipathique. Plus tard, Sweeney a formé Chavez avec le batteur James Lo (ex Live Skull), le guitariste Clay Tarver (ex Bullet Lavolta), et le bassiste Scott Masciarelli. Repeat The Ending (Matador, 1994) a annoncé leur style de punk-rock légèrement-dissonant-quoique-hymnique (? : slighlty-dissonant-while-anthemic) avec d'énormes riffs hard-rock. Le court mais intense album Gone Glimmering (Matador, 1995) brille quand le groupe combine des accélérations fortement chargées, des dissonances, des sons new wave de guitares et des mélodies (Pentagram Ring, Nailed To The Blank Spot, Break Up Your Band, Ghost By The Sea). Chavez apparaît comme une version plus mélodique de Mission Of Burma et, parfois, de Television.
    Skullfisher est David Pajo, un musicien de Louisville, Kentucky. Il est d'abord apparu en 1981 sur un single new wave, avec Chuch of American Astronauts, un groupe punk local. Il réapparaît ensuite en 1987 avec la sortie de Tweez par Slint. Annoncé par Steve Albini, le groupe sort un EP et le remarquable Spiderland. Suivant leur fin en 1990, David apparaît encore avec King Kong et The Palace Brothers, groupes locaux. On le voit faire des tournées avec des groupes divers pendant la décennie suivante ; jouant de la guitare avec Stereolab, de la basse avec Royal Trux, de la batterie avec King Kong, des congas avec Palace et du piano avec Will Oldham. Il apparaît encore dans le milieu des années 90 sur les albums de Tortoise, "Millions Now Living Will Never Die" et "T.N.T.". Cependant un mince mais régulier courant d'enregistrements de Papa M a flotté doucement depuis 1995 jusqu'à évoluer finalement dans la tendance, le solide Papa M qui est reconnu aujourd'hui.
    Paz Lenchantin vient du groupe A Perfect Circle. Somebodys gotta play the bass, c'est elle, dès le 5 avril avec Zwan ; elle intervient aussi au chant. Elle est né le 12 décembre 1973, joue aussi de la guitare, du piano, du violon, aime les jeux vidéo, Tim Burton, lire. Ah, it's been such a long time...you know, relatively speaking, not too long I suppose, but fortunately long enough...that's for you escher fans...in the past, my posts have probably seemed a bit too obscure for most...so I will keep this happily simple so no one can complain (yeah, right!)...this being a positive age, or at least one that begs for positivity, I will stay on the 'sunny side of street' and be the bearer of only good news...the zwan album is just about done and we are all very excited and proud that we were able to come together to make this possible...we've been having a lot of fun, working like wizards under red lights here in the studio... and once a week we foray into reality for jack sweeney's open mic nights at the hideout/chicago, who were gracious enough to let us have their stage once a week to do as we wish, and we've been lucky enough to be able to share the night with some of the best artists chicago has to offer...everyone in zwan has worked very ! hard so we could make the first zwan record a reality by the end of this year...and it looks like we will probably be playing some shows after thanksgiving, so please come and check us out if you can...and now for some really exciting news regarding the vieuphoria dvd that's coming out for christmas...when we decided to finally put out vieuphoria on dvd, the idea to put out some additional footage came up...unfortunately, a lot of the tapes that made up the original version are missing...but we managed to find some of them, and look for extra songs from the same concerts in the honest hope of uncovering something fresh...unfortunately, a lot of what I saw really wasn't that goose pimple worthy, and as only a few weeks ago the only extra on the dvd was going to some in-studio footage on the making of siamese dream...to be fair, the siamese studio footage is actually quite entertaining, but it didn't really feel like we were adding that much to the original vieuphoria... Which brings me to the point of all this explaining...I had asked a friend who works for us to look thru some of our stuff to see if we had our own copies of the footage that was missing...he couldn't find what I had asked for, and in frustration started digging around in some old cases seeing if anything had been overlooked...these are old cases from the siamese dreams tours that we keep in a storage locker...also in there is stuff from when bandmembers have moved, you know, old lamps and couches and james' blacklight paintings...anyhow, underneath some old tires he found a small cardboard box with some unlabled videotapes...he brought these tapes here to the studio and said I should look at them because it could be what I was looking for...so when I put the tapes in, I really wasn't expecting much at all, certainly not what he had found...I watched the tapes, and couldn't believe what I was seeing...I had jimmy watch them with me, and we were so excited we asked anyone around us, including matt, david, and paz to tell us what they thought...everyone agreed that it was the most exciting and dramatic footage of the pumpkins that we had ever seen from around the vieuphoria time period of 88-94...the tapes are from 1994, and prior to finding them we didn't even know these tapes existed...they are a little raw, but really do capture the spirit and aggresion of the band back in the good old days...on a personal note, jimmy's wife lori is about to have a baby, and all of the zwan family is waiting as we speak to get the call to go up to the hospital to be with both of them, so please send them your prayers...we really appreciate all the good energy, support, and love that everyone has shown us over the past year and a half...thanks a lot, and we look forward to seeing you all very soon, wherever you are (this means you australia, and south america too)...all the best bc.
